PE 6 Moodle Advanced Features

Moodle is so extensive and with so many options.   The one thing that lynda.com doesn't tell you is  the time it would take to practice what they are showing the lessons.  This takes a lot of time.  I barely made it half way through the tutorials and I have worked hard on them. I would say for every hour they give, it will take another hour to practice and apply.  It is not worth it to just view them and say you did it.  Application and practice is absolutely necessary.  I would rather go through them thoroughly and not get the certificate, than just view them, get the certificate to say I did. 


PE_5 Moodle..Next Steps

Join me today in my review of Moodle.  I have realized something more about the way I learn.  When I use my voice, see the visual and have some interaction.  I am able to reinforce what I have learned about something.  This is working great screenflow in helping to review what I previously studied!

BP 12-Commerical Web 2.0 Tool

BP9- Web 2.0 Tool


The web 2.0 tool I decided to use this is week is:    Dabbleboard.
Dabbleboard is great for writing concepts maps, ideas, and group collaboration.  There is also the ability to chat through video conference or just voice.




I see the applicability of this tool in several forms:

1)  English-Pulling together several classes from different rooms while they collaborate about the same book they are reading.
2) Math- Maybe like having a competition between 2 classes in solving a problem or working separately.
3)  Corporate- Using Socratic Questioning to have trainees coming up with ideas towards their own problems, even working through different departments in various locations.

This tool has many of the same properties as Wimba, but the interface is a little bit different.  There is also no chat room like Wimba, which would seriously dampen the mood of our class.

PE_3 iMovie

Adding beat markers


I always wanted to know how people get their music perfect as it flows seamlessly from one song to the next or from one song to the other.  iMovie has what is called beat markers.  You do this by placing the music in the project in the new project window.  Click the icon on the bottom left hand side of the song and it takes you to the screen above.  Next you click m for every beat that you want it marked at.
Now why is this important?  Take a look. 
When you add still photos, the photos are placed at exactly where you placed the beats.  How cool is that?

PE_2 IMovie

One of the things I have seen from a number of FullSail students was these great videos where they have awesome music playing and they are talking over it.  I didn't know how they did this until I found a feature called...Ducking.

The ducking feature under the inspector allows the user to reduce the volume of other tracks while the track selected at the normal volume.  Thus, I am able to talk while the music is playing.  What a great feature!!!

PE_1 IMOVIE


One of the things I love doing is learning about new programs.  I am glad this course is putting me into the spotlight to learn about new programs.  I also enjoy working in Lynda.com because they really do have some great tutorials that I have used for many years.  I know the basics of iMovie, but I want to learn more.  My movie productions used to be really great, but know I consider just them average.  I am looking forward to learning and become an iMovie expert.

One of the rookie mistakes I have made using transitions is using them in all instances.  The applying and modifying transitions said it was better to use NONE, then use them.  They also said to stay away from exotic ones.  Great tips I didn't know Lynda!  Thanks!

bp5-Web2.0 Tools-Blogger




One of the things my school had mentioned at the beginning of the year was to improve student test scores in writing.  I started using Google documents to have my students collaborate and practice their writing skills.  I decided that I wanted to incorporate another way of having my students write and integrate a technology or Web 2.0 they are familiar with.  I am surprised that many of my students have tweeter accounts.  I ask them why they have it and they tell me it is to have people follow them.  I ask, "Why do you want them to follow you?"  Their response is...I don't know.  I see there is a desire to use Web 2.0 tools, but they don't see a clear way to use it.  

What I have done?  

I started a blog specifically for my class.  I am going to blog about specific topics that may interest kids.  My first one was about video games and their implication to their education.  I mentioned I am looking for new ways to integrate new games and any ideas would be great.  I had them work the blog when I wasn't there, so it wasn't as great of a success as I was hoping.  Next Monday, I will go over more about the blog, and blogging itself.  I will have the students work on commenting on my blog, making sure their spelling and grammar is correct. I would like to have their own blog in the future and the reason why they are blogging.  I am hoping by doing this they would enjoy writing more and improve in their test scores.

BP4-Web 2.0-Games

When I read this assignment, I thought about what my students would like and how I can incorporate it into my classroom.  I saw the web 2.0 tools and I went to gaming.  My kids love games and right away the one that stood out was Farmville.  I never played Farmville because I have heard of the addictive nature of the game.  I thought, how can I apply something that I know kids would love, be engaged and learn?  I believe Farmville is that tool.

One of the items I found was Youtube video done by a FSO student and she gave great points in how to incorporate it.

They talked about how Farmville can be used educationally in relation to students starting a business, math, and group cooperation.

In this article they mentioned how Farmville can also be used for math and organization integration.

My plan for implementation.  I have started making a Google Presentation that will implement a business plan like the one mentioned in the video.  I will also make a spreadsheet so students will be able to track their profits with their crops.  I will also place the students in teams to see which of the teams will come out on top. 


Now as I was doing research, I came to find out that Farmville can only be accessed through Facebook.  I was hoping that there would be a stand alone Farmville, but I couldn't find one.  I would love to integrate this Web 2.0, but we all know for the most part...Facebook is banned at my district and most others.

Week 1-Blog URL

Well, I have been reading blogs for quiet some time now and I have posted to some blogs, but this Master's Program is placing in the mix of technology and I like it!  Before, I felt like I didn't have time to get involved with blogs, but I now have an another tool to add to my technology skills and apply them to my classroom setting.  I am always looking for new ways to connect with my kids and I believe blogs is another tool to connect with them.  This is their world and I am glad to be a part of it.

I will also be starting a class blog that my students will do every Friday. I already have them doing journals through Google Documents, but I am ready to start applying more Web 2.0 tools to my curriculum and help the core areas of my school.
